Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. Not the best movie. Perhaps, in my top 5 of movie experiences though.
I found this movie ticket in a box the other day and boy did it bring back memories.
Back in 2009, my wife and I attended a showing of Transformers 2 in the Airbus IMAX Theater at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. The Udvar-Hazy Center is part of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum near Washington-Dulles Airport. They have some awesome aircraft here:
- Space Shuttle Discovery
- Mercury Capsule
- Enola Gay
- SR-71 Blackbird
- Concorde
- A-6E Intruder
- F-4S Phantom II
So back to the movie. There were a couple things that made watching this movie in this particular location pretty cool.
First, the IMAX experience. There’s a scene in a forest shot in IMAX where Optimus Prime stands life-size in his robotic form. The 1:1 size ratio was spectacular to see.
Second, there’s another scene where the Transformers go to the Udvar-Hazy Center seeking a Decepticon seeker. It was surreal hearing and seeing this going on around you on this huge screen, half expecting a real Transformer to find it’s way into the theater.
These movies aren’t the greatest. But the spectacle of them was elevated just by watching them in this place.
